Longtime police chief says Holmen could outgrow Onalaska in next decade

today after 42 years

Communities just outside La Crosse have experienced rapid growth in recent years. Onalaska’s population has doubled since 1980, and Holmen is now about half of Onalaska’s size.

The question now is whether Holmen’s population may overtake Onalaska’s.

Retiring Holmen police chief Mike McHugh believes it could outgrow Onalaska within the next 10 years.

McHugh has watched the Holmen Police Dept. grow steadily in his 36 years as chief. Today is his last day in charge. Lt. Shane Collins moves up to the chief’s post tomorrow. 

A native of Prairie du Chien, Brad graduated from UW - La Crosse and has worked in radio news for more than 30 years, mostly in the La Crosse area. He regularly covers local courts and city and county government. Brad produces the features "Yesterday in La Crosse" and "What's Buried on Brad's Desk." He also writes the website "Triviazoids," which finds odd connections between events that happen on a certain date, and he writes and performs with the local comedy group Heart of La Crosse. Brad been featured on several national TV programs because of his memory skills.
