Expert offers advice on when to head out on ice

Not all areas are safe for fishing

The conditions aren’t great for ice fishing yet.

Coulee Region Outdoor owner and ice fisherman Anthony Larson advises how thick the ice should be fore what activities.

  • Two inches or less: stay off
  • Four inches: Ice fishing and other activities on foot
  • Five inches: Snowmobiles, ATVs
  • 8-12 inches: Cars and small pickups
  • 12-more inches: Medium trucks

Larson adds that temperature, snow cover, currents and springs all affect the relative safety of ice.
