La Crosse doing housekeeping in merger rules

Inspections and fire dept. 
officially under one roof

A formal change to La Crosse city rules this month reflects how the city has been functioning for the last year and a half.

The city council will do some ordinance housekeeping to reflect the merger of the inspections and fire department that happened in mid-2014.

Fire chief Gregg Cleveland says the move has been very successful, resulting in what he calls, “a one-two punch” in getting problem properties addressed.

“We’re trying to be more proactive in getting out there,” Cleveland said, “finding these spots and hitting them hard to try to bring them into compliance.”

Cleveland says he has seven inspectors in, what is now, a division of the fire department.
