City council member says senior centers still prime gathering place
Two buildings need
$500,000 in repairs
Lingering concerns of seniors in La Crosse over a couple of city buildings.
The city’s two senior-center buildings are old and in need of mountains of repairs. They are, however, apparently still a prime gathering and activity place for seniors, says city council member Andrea Richmond
“Whether it’s dancing, playing cards or just socialization,” Richmond said. “And that is a key component here; keeping seniors active.”
Richmond opposes a proposal for the city to sign final, five-year leases with the senior center organizations, after which the buildings would be sold.
Council member Bob Seaquist supports the plan, saying the buildings are just too costly to maintain.
“Frankly, I would rather take that money and use it for park and recreation department programs,” Seaquist said, “and doing the work we need in the Black River Center and the South Side Community Center and the Myrick Center.”
The city spends around $20,000 a year on basic upkeep of the two senior centers, but a recent analysis found the buildings need about $500,000 in repairs.
A city council committee approved the lease plan at a Thursday night meeting.
