New bill could make talking on cell while driving illegal
Hands-free technology
already required in 14 states
You may think you drive perfectly well when you’re on the phone.
You’re wrong, and there’s plenty of evidence to contradict you, says Wisconsin state rep Peter Barca, who has authored a bill that would require all drivers to use only hands-free technology with their phones.
“There have been plenty of studies done that demonstrate,” Barca said, “that it’s far safer to have people do hands-free cell phones.”
Barca says one study shows cell phone use is responsible for six percent of all crashes, having an economic impact of $43 billion annually.
There are 14 states that currently require cell phone use while driving to be hands-free.
If Barca’s bill becomes law, it would not be implemented for a year.
Barca says that should give enough time for those who want to use their phones while driving to acquire the appropriate technology to do so.
