Civil rights activist Christburg
to speak at Viterbo tonight

This year marks the 30th anniversary of the national holiday honoring Martin Luther King and, for most of those years, La Crosse has held a public celebration to remember the civil rights leader.

At 7 p.m. tonight, the Viterbo University will host the King Day program featuring Sheyann Webb Christburg.

When she was 9 years old, Christburg took part in the Selema, Ala., march organized by Dr. King.

“Dr. King has actually referred to her as the littlest marcher,” Program organizer Keith Knutson said.

Christburg will also speak with La Crosse area students Tuesday.

Last year’s event attracted an overflow crowd to hear speaker Ruby Bridges.

“I was letting people in the side door to sit in the aisles, getting as many people in as possible,” Knutson said.
