Roads like Hwy. 14
and 61 will be studied

Some well-traveled highways in southeast Minnesota will be studied by the Minnesota Dept. of Transportation (MnDOT) this year to see if raising the speed limit above 55 would be a good idea.

Mike Dougherty from MnDot in Rochester, Minn., says traffic on highways 61 and 14 will be watched.

Dougherty says the five-year, statewide study resulted from complaints out of northern Minnesota that the speed limit on straight highways in rural areas is too low.

Dougherty said it might not be practical to raise the speed limit on roads through the bluff country, because of all the curves. Recommendations from the study are expected by 2019.
