Still time to get ID, even after vote

Efforts in court have failed to halt photo ID requirements to vote in Wisconsin. Tuesday, marks the first election now, where those in Wisconsin will need an acceptable photo ID to vote.

But, even if you can’t get an acceptable ID by Tuesday’s vote, there’s still time and options.

“If you don’t have your photo ID, there’s the option of voting provisionally,” said La Crosse County clerk Ginny Dankmeyer. “But then you mark your ballot, but your ballot won’t be counted … you still have to bring back an acceptable photo ID.”

Also, it’s important to know what information on an ID they’re looking for at the polls.

“A lot of people are worried their driver’s license doesn’t have a current address,” Dankmeyer explained. “So, if you’re using that for photo ID, remember it doesn’t have to have a current address. We’re just looking at the photo, the name and the expiration date.”

Dankmeyer says poll workers in the county have been prepared for the ID requirement to take effect over the last three to four years, while the law was suspended because of court challenges.
