Teachers want to raise
awareness of vouchers

It’s not a school walk out getting staged by La Crosse teachers this morning.  It’s a walk-in.

Just after 7 a.m. today, short walk-in rallies are planned at all La Crosse public schools.

The concept is a pretty simple one for La Crosse teacher union president John Havlicek.

“We are walking-in to support public education, and to raise awareness about the negative effects of the privatization of public education,” said Havlicek, who noted the increasing use of taxpayer vouchers to send kids to private schools decreases much needed funding for public schools.

It’s just a bad formula for success.

“Every time you take money out of the public system and start shoveling into the private system, you really set up a difficult situation,” Havlicek said. “The public school system is already severely underfunded.”
