Presidential nominations still a tight race, says expert

Wisconsin’s voting April 5 will have big impact

Wisconsin voters will still likely have a say in the presidential picking contest come April.

That’s the view of University of Wisconsin-La Crosse political scientist, Joe Heim, who doesn’t see any of the republican or democratic presidential candidates running away with their respective races after voting in four states today – not even Hillary Clinton with her supposed strength in democratic superdelegates.

“These are people that have said, ‘Yes, I’m supporting her, I vote for her,’ but they can change their mind,” Heim said.

Today’s votes come in Hawaii, Idaho Michigan and Mississippi. Wisconsin primary voting is April 5.

While most mass media outlets show voting totals that include superdelegates, the actual race between Bernie Sanders and Clinton is very close.

Clinton holds a 673-477 delegate lead in a race to 2,383.

On the Republican said, things could start to look bleak soon for Marco Rubio.

“He really has to win Florida or he is, for all intensive purposes, this race is over,” said Heim, who’s taught political science at UW-L for over 40 years.

Heim thinks it’s likely neither democratic or republican presidential primary race will decided before Wisconsin voters go to the polls on April 5.
