National Anthem not getting respect

Sparta Legion out to change that

Too many people are disrespectful during the National Anthem, according to the Sparta American Legion.

It is starting a public awareness campaign on how to conduct yourself during the song. 

“There’s not a lot of patriotism when the national anthem is played,” Commander Tim Hyma said. “Hopefully we can teach those that are less knowledgeable.”

Hyma believes too many people talk, smoke, drink and joke around during the song. 

He hopes veterans will set an example, standing and saluting the flag, as is a uniformed solider’s right since the passing of the 2009 Defense Authorization Act.

Hyma said he is in contact with the Sparta school district and other organizations to get the word out.
