Or they could be turned away for improper ID

A 40-percent turnout today in Wisconsin could be the minimum.

Some estimates are closer to 50 percent for those showing up to vote at the polls.

At the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, student association president Kaylee Otterbacher says the student body there seems highly energized to vote.

“I really think, honestly, there’s going to be a huge turnout and I really hope that I’m not proven wrong there,” she said. “This is a really important election and I think students are paying attention, which is really rewarding to see.”

Otterbacher is a little anxious about voter ID rules.

Today marks the first major test for voter ID. Estimates dating back to when the Voter ID law first came to be were that some 300,000 in Wisconsin would not have proper ID to vote.

Some of those could be college students, whose school IDs are considered unacceptable forms of identification for voting in Wisconsin.

Another curiosity of Otterbacher’s is the presidential nomination race itself.

“Very interesting to be already in April and have none of the presidential primaries planned out yet, or not perspective winner,” she said.

Otterbacher says special efforts will be made to get students to get to the polls – and to bring their IDs.
