Trump, Sanders are right: System is rigged

Published

on

Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders are right about one thing. The system is rigged. Powerful party bosses are working hard to ensure that neither is the nominee of their respective party. It should be as simple as whoever gets the most votes wins. But the convoluted system that involves superdelegates takes the power away from the people. Even if Trump picks up the most support after all the primaries, he may not get the nomination. Bernie Sanders keeps winning states, but can’t seem to catch Hillary Clinton in the race for delegates. That’s because those superdelegates seem to be backing Hillary. Just look at Wisconsin. Bernie Sanders carried the state, but because of superdelegates, basically split the state. This is not an exercise in democracy. It seems the world’s foremost democracy is not really all that democratic. And the rules concerning these superdelegates are far from clear. In fact, no only can an unpledged superdelegate vote for whoever they want, regardless of what the people of their state decide, they can allow themselves to be courted by candidates like Trump or Sanders. They can be lavished with gifts, or expensive vacations, in order to convince them how to vote. This should not be a members-only club, where rules don’t apply. Is it any wonder why people are so disillusioned with politics? What is the point of even voting, if the delegates are just going to do whatever they want?
