Rental registration rules could be on the outs in La Crosse

State laws changed how gov. can regulate rentals

Whole sections of La Crosse’s rental registration rules appear on the verge of going away.

A late addition to the city council agenda for tonight is a proposal to repeal several parts of the city’s rental registration and inspection ordinance that was targeted by a lawsuit from local landlords two years ago.  

Since then, state lawmakers have passed new rules that limit how local governments can regulate rentals.  

Under new state laws – and reflected in rule changes considered by the city council tonight – a local government can still require registration of rentals as long as that registration is limited to a request for name, address and property agent.

Inspections of rentals will still be allowed in the city but are limited to certain conditions like responses to complaints.
