First-ever from school to receive award

The WIAA only names 32 of them in the state, and Gale-Ettrick-Trempealea High School has two of them.

Lucas Scherr and Bailey Schmidt both received the Scholar Athlete award for 2015-16.

The two will be honored in Wausau, Wis., on May 1.

“We’ve never had a WIAA scholar athlete and to have two in the same year is kind of unprecedented,” G-E-T athletic director Pete Peterson said. “Bailey comes in as the valedictorian with a 4.0 and Lucas is right there with a 3.9.

“I watch them interact with others, and they’re some of the most caring people as well. They’re such well-rounded individuals.”

Getting the honor is no surprise to Peterson, who said GPA, along with varsity letters and postseason success are part of the criteria for the honor.
