Gates came down in February

La Crosse’s parking board could vote today on whether to reactivate the ticket gates in the downtown ramps, which have been shut down for nearly two months.

The city had tentatively decided to keep them off until the May 1, while staffers studied ways to prevent them from being vandalized.

The board may extend the period of free hourly parking in the ramps, or it may have the ticket machines removed.

The ticket gates had generated about $12,000 a month in city revenue for 2016.

A few weeks ago, the city council agreed to a reorganization plan that gives the La Crosse Police Dept. authority over the operation of the ramps.

This, after the city hired Jim Flottmeyer as the new parking utility coordinator on March 14.

Assistant police chief Rob Abraham, who met with Flottmeyer last week, had said – before that meeting – he hoped something other than ticket gates would be in place to charge for parking.
