Alternate-side parking in March could remain
Police says it needs money from law,
council members call it money grab
Alternate-side parking in La Crosse could be shorter in the future.
Right now, however, it’s too close to call.
Tuesday, a city council committee split on a proposal to shorten the city’s alternate-side parking season by a month.
La Crosse’s police chief said the city needs the revenue from enforcement of that month.
The city’s public works dept. says alternate-side parking allows for better street cleaning, even when there’s not snow on the ground.
Some on the city council, however, say enforcement during dry, sunny and warm fall and spring days amounts to a money grab.
The full council votes on shortening alternate-side parking at a meeting next week.
