Salvation Army helping low-income families with children lunches

Program feeds 300 per week

The Summer Lunch program put on by the Salvation Army feeds about 300 kids per week. 

It’s an important program for low-income families, who depend on school lunches during the school year. When summer comes, however, that structure is gone without the help of the Salvation Army.

“It’s huge and sometimes it’s hard for the rest of us to imagine what it’s like to not have lunch every day,” Julie Nelson with the Salvation Army said. “We tend to try and resist food. But some of these people right here in La Crosse, really, really appreciate what we try and do for them.”

The program is always looking for help and donations. Nelson says they’ll take all types of food, but there are other things in need, as well.

“Anything else you could think of,” she said. “the (brown paper) sacks, zip lock baggies, juice boxes, water bottles, (those kinds) of things, we need a lot of.”

An $8-per-plate chicken-Q hosted at State Bank Financial (401 State Street, downtown La Crosse) will take place from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. today to help back the Salvation Army’s program.
