Eighth-grader made it to
second round of Day 2

He made it through the written portion of the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, La Crosse Lincoln Middle School’s Nathan Jarrett was on ESPN3 for the event, which took over five hours.

The world watched him spell sepulchral correctly in the first round.

In the second round, however, the eighth grader misspelled “euphotic.” Jarret spelled it e-u-p-h-D-i-c.

He first asked for the definition, then the language of origin. After misspelling the word, you could see him sigh just a bit, before saying, “thank you,” and quietly leaving the stage.

He’s one of three young spellers who represented Wisconsin.

The other two were eliminated Tuesday, because of low scores in the written round.

Jarret is first student from the La Crosse School District to ever compete in the national bee.

You can rewatch the event here. His last word is spelled at the 4:35.45 mark.
