Could Memorial Pool still open this summer?

Neighborhood group member thinks it needs to

Summer is unofficially here.

Pools aren’t open quite yet in La Crosse for the kids getting out of school this week and one won’t open at all.

Memorial Pool was voted closed for summer last month by City Hall.

But, Jacob Sciammas from the Grandview Emerson Neighborhood Association still believes the pool could be opened.

Because that’s better than the alternative of keeping it closed for two or three years for analysis and a drawn-out refurbishment.

“Three years in the life of our kids, that might be all many people ever get of the use of that pool in their neighborhood,” Sciammas said.

The pool was closed primarily due to safety concerns, but Sciammas believes there is an out.

“When I hear someone say that the resolution didn’t prohibit them from looking at three other sites, then I think, ‘The resolution didn’t prohibit them from opening it for a day or two,'” he said.

Sciammas is hoping to hear something from city hall on the pool in the next few days.

“I strongly stand by the point, if we open this pool for a short amount of time, it will give us much more opportunity to decide what to do with the pool in the future, if we decide to keep it open,” Sciammas said.

He believes the decision to close the pool wasn’t definitive, and he hopes that plan could change.
