As I See It

What will it take for republicans to turn their backs on Trump?

What to do about Donald Trump? That’s a question many key Republicans are wrestling with, and it has left them trying to walk a very fine line. Trump has enough delegates to capture the Republican presidential nomination, but it is clear many key members of his party aren’t thrilled with the prospect. But so far, they are sticking with him. No matter what he says. Trump’s latest comments to land him in hot water have to do with a judge who is deciding a case about Trump University. Trump referred to him as a Mexican, even though he was born in Indiana. He doesn’t think he can get a fair trial, because of the judge’s heritage, given Trump’s desire to build a wall across the border. Governor Scott Walker, who has pledged to vote for the party’s nominee, presumably even Trump, has condemned Trump’s comments, but is refusing to say whether he still backs the candidate. U.S. Senator Ron Johnson of Wisconsin has tried to walk an even finer line, first saying he would support, but not endorse Trump. But he also said that if The Donald did or said anything that crossed the line, he would withdraw his support. But while Johnson has condemned the comments, he has not withdrawn his support. Apparently racist comments don’t cross the line in Johnson’s mind. So far it seems, no matter what vitriol Trump spews, members of his party will continue to try to walk a very fine line that seems to exist only in their minds.
