Parking diminished as Riverside ramp’s $6 million addition underway?

There might not be as many problems parking in downtown La Crosse as originally anticipated with work beginning on the Riverside parking ramp downtown.

That may come as a relief to many commuters. Hundreds of commuters, actually.

That’s how many get displaced as the Riverside parking ramp went offline Monday for a year-long construction project to add two floors at a cost of $6 million.

City parking utility coordinator Jim Flottmeyer said they’re still considering plans to deal with where hundreds of cars might go that would normally park in that ramp.

He said several ideas are still on the table, including, possibly, some 12-hour street parking zones, along with leased spaces from Xcel Energy and others.

Meanwhile, Flottmeyer also said there were spaces to be had Monday in the La Crosse Center ramp. So, maybe it’s not much of a problem after all.

The Riverside construction will add about 300 parking spaces.
