Public wants to keep old Winona bridge open

Renovation plans cost $38 million

The public has spoken on plans for the old Winona bridge over the Mississippi River.

Two of six design ideas remain on the table. Those two would retain much of the historic nature of the downtown Winona bridge.

The most expensive of the renovation plans would cost about $38 million.

The Minnesota Dept. of Transportation is leaning toward keeping the aging bridge downtown, even after a newer bridge opens around August, thanks to input from the public.

“From an agency perspective, (public input) was really part of the purpose and need for the project,” project manager Terry Ward said.

The desire for four lanes crossing the river has been a key to future transportation needs in Winona, according to Ward.

Ward added that before the new bridge opens, work could begin on remodeling the approach lanes to the existing bridge.
