Sen. Ron Johnson doesn’t want to shut down borders, but be more selective
Johnson wants to be 100 percent sure who is allowed in
A lot of criticism has come form Donald Trump’s latest call to ban Muslim immigrants in the wake of Sunday’s Orlando nightclub shooting.
While Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, a Trump supporter, doesn’t believe shutting the nation’s borders will work, he does think the nation can be more selective.
“Only elect people in that we are 100 percent sure are those individuals that have no affiliation whatsoever,” Johnson said.
Johnson, chair of the senate homeland security committee, says the nation faces grave dangers, not just from radicalized Muslims coming from outside the country, but also from those homegrown extremists like, apparently, Omar Mateen, the Orlando mass murderer. Mateen, a natural born American citizen, pledged his allegiance to ISIS during a 911 call.
Johnson says, while it’s not workable to exercise such a ban, the nation can set up criteria that doesn’t accept potentially risky immigrants.
“I think we can keep America safe and still be compassionate and humane,” he said.
