Felons not getting voting rights back in Iowa
State Supreme Court ruled to continue never-ending punishment
Plenty of disappointment for those hoping to end Iowa’s harsh rules about felons voting.
The ruling by the state Supreme Court on Thursday, that upholds the Iowa’s rule that disenfranchises felons permanently, will continue to impact nearly 60,000 people – 60,000 who will never be able to vote again under current state law.
Iowa is one of only three states with voting rights rules as harsh for felons.
Meanwhile, Wisconsin and Minnesota are among the 30 states that allow felons to regain their voting rights once they’re no longer behind bars or on probation.
In a couple states – Maine and Vermont – felons never lose their right to vote.
