WWII vets will still have top priority

If you’re a veteran, you now qualify to take part in La Crosse’s Freedom Honor Flight.

The program that takes vets from La Crosse to Washington, D.C., has changed its rules so anyone can take part.

“(In) prior years, we’ve had restrictions on the time that they’ve served,” Honor Flight president Pat Stephens said. “As long as you’ve had the uniform on and served your country , we’re taking applications for anybody. That should increase the eligibility by hundreds of people.”

Veterans of World War II will still have top priority, but as their numbers decrease, more vets from the Korean and Vietnam wars have been added to the flights.

Those honor flights have been operating in the La Crosse area for eight years now, usually scheduled twice a year.
