He adds, if you’re unhappy, plead not guilty, fight charge in court

For some lawmakers, it’s easier to relate to the conversation over police arrest methods.

Tremppealeau state rep, Chris Danou is a former Onalaska police officer. He says the issues related to race and policing are far from simple, although there’s certainly one way to make things better immediately.

“So many problems could be avoided if, when people are dealing with police, they just complied with the officer’s orders,” Danou said. “I understand there are times when people feel like the officer isn’t correct, wants to argue.

“And, you know what I always tell them? ‘Here’s your citation. Here’s what I’m dealing with you sir. If you really feel like this is an issue and you don’t agree with the results, this is what we have the courts for.'”

Danou said, as a cop, he tried to deescalate conflict by encouraging full use of the judicial system.

“If you’re not happy with the citation being issued to you, plead not guilty and go to court,” he said.

Danou added that he’s struggled over the latest issues involving shootings of civilians and police in the U.S.

“I can tell you, personally,” he said, “what’s going on is tearing me apart, with the way law enforcement is under attack. But, at the same time, recognizing there are some racial inequities that we have to deal with. There’s no doubt about it.”
