Pigeon wars in La Crosse. City council member questions new rules
New “no feeding” rule would contradict
the old pigeon control method
Pigeon wars look to be heating up a little in La Crosse, as city council members have differing views on new proposals for controlling the birds.
“I think that this is a solution looking for a problem,” said La Crosse downtown city council rep. James Cherf, who is criticizing the new rules from another city council member for a more heavy-handed approach in dealing with the city’s pigeon population.
Cherf says there’s just not that many pigeons in the city that there would be a need for penalties for feeding pigeons, or having the city impose pigeon proofing in buildings – both of which are called for in the newly proposed rules.
He adds that it’s unrealistic to believe the pigeon population is unmanageable using current methods that include feeding the birds birth control tainted food – something that would now be illegal under the new proposal.
