U.S. Senate candidate wants to get rid of voter ID law

Russ Feingold was in La Crosse on Friday campaigning for a seat in the U.S. Senate.

The Democrat is a supporter of a two-party system in politics, but what he witnessed at the Republican National Convention wasn’t quite what he had in mind.

“I do want the Republican Party to be a sound party,” Feingold said. “I think we should have a two-party system. But this is a carnival!”

Feingold went on to talk of his disgust with GOP nominee Donald Trump.

“He’s obviously not qualified to be president, doesn’t know much,” Feingold said. “He doesn’t even have a serious attention span.”

As for Feingold’s thoughts on the Democratic nominee for president: ” “Hillary Clinton is one of the best people I’ve ever seen at absorbing information, processing it and staying focused,” Feingold said. “She’s going to be a great president.”

Feingold also talked about the importance of ridding the system of unneeded voter ID laws. Federal Judge Lynn Adelman said voters should be able to cast ballots without a photo ID.

“That was the right thing to do and, ultimately, we need to overturn the voter ID law, either in the courts or through legislative action,” Feingold said.

“They’re (Republicans) trying to get fewer people to vote. We have this great idea that it’s better to get more people to vote, that it’s somehow more like a democracy.”A

Feingold is up against Republican Ron Johnson. The Wisconsin primary is Aug. 9.
