La Crosse airport making space for breastfeeding mothers

Storage room will be converted at a $20,000 cost

Last month, the Des Moines airport made headlines for adding a $100,000 dog bathroom.

It was for a new law that required indoor animal facilities. The approach by the La Crosse airport took was to give those pet owners pet relief pads and make the handicap facilities available for animals – there’s also an outdoor area, but the law required an indoor option.

It was cost-saving plan that now could pay dividends for breastfeeding mothers and just in time for national breastfeeding month.

The La Crosse city council is working on a plan to spend $20,000 on a special room at the La Crosse airport for breastfeeding.

The airport will turn an old storage room into a nursing area. The city says a nursing room is required under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act and what the airport has now is substandard.

A city council committee votes on the plan tonight.
