Eight-light system into
effect after new law was passed

A new eight-light system will allow drivers to be well aware when school buses are about to stop.

Before a driver sees the red flashing lights, buses will warn a stop is coming with four new, flashing amber colored lights – all part of a law passed earlier this year.

When amber lights are flashing, drivers can still pass, but once the red lights are on, they must stop within 20 feet of bus.

“Currently in the last 30-40 years, they’ve been using four red lights,” Dave Butcher with GO Riteway, the new bus company for the La Crosse School District, said.

If a driver doesn’t adhere to the red warning lights, the fine is $326 and four points on driver’s record.
