Wisconsin voter ID law back on, but you have some options without it

The latest reversal on voter photo identification in Wisconsin could be re-reversed depending on what happens with those suing the state over the voter ID rules.

In the meantime, Andrea Kaminski, executive director with the League of Women Voters, says the safe way to make sure you can vote in November is to get a proper ID.  

But there is another option.

“Don’t give up,” Kaminsky advised. “If you don’t have an ID, go ahead and vote. You’ll get a provisional ballot and we can help you clear it up after the election.”

A decision this week by a federal appeals court suspends a July ruling by another court that would have allowed those without photo identification to vote in the November election.  

The July ruling would have allowed signed affidavits in place of a photo ID at the polls.  The appeals court says that decision was likely to be overturned eventually anyway.  

But Kaminski says there’s still a possibility the rejection of the affidavits could be reversed. That depends on the next moves by those who had originally sued over the voter ID rules.
