La Crosse streamlining government, looks to remove public works dept.

Change could save $150,000

A long sought after reorganization of La Crosse city hall appears to be moving forward.  

A proposal to eliminate the city’s public works director will be considered by the city council next month.

The proposal comes as current public works boss Dale Hexom plans to retire by the end of the year.

More than two years ago, the city began working on ways to streamline government, including trimming down the number of department managers from nearly 20 to something closer to five. 

Under the new proposal, the public works dept. would more or less cease to exist.

The change would save an estimated $150,000. Other streamlining processes are already underway with the city council shrinking from 17 to 13 members for the April elections.
