School board finalizes part of budget, questions crossing guard numbers

Community Service Fund part of budget complete

The La Crosse School District finalized part of the budget that covers police, community liaisons and using the Logan pool by the public.

The Community Service Fund is a big piece of the budget.

The board questioned why some basketball courts at the high schools needed repair. 

“The courts at the elementary level are well maintained because there’s recess there,” business services director Janet Rosseter said. “It’s more at the high school where they fall into more disreapair.”

Another discussion at the board meeting Monday was over a lack of crossing guards.

“The number has descreased drastically,” school board president Connie Troyanek said. “The kids no longer walk to school, although it’s two blocks away, because they have to cross Mormon Coulee Rd. And the parents won’t allow them to cross Mormon Coulee Rd. without a crossing guard.”

The problem ends up being like a dog chasing its tail.

“The police dept. monitors the number of students that cross,” Rosseter said. “So, if the use isn’t there and they pull back on the resources, it becomes kind of a catch-22. 

“You can’t build the use up because there’s nobody there (to help them cross).”
