Memorial pool remains in spending plans for 2017
Citizens group living near pool wants it to reopen
A citizens’ group which wants to save La Crosse’s Memorial Pool thinks it can also save plenty of money on renovations.
The Grandview Emerson Neighborhood Association tells the city plan commission on Tuesday during a packed budget hearing that it ordered a study showing ways to fix the 80-year-old swimming pool for thousands of dollars less than a city consultant recommends.
GENA’s Jacob Sciammas says $3 million would cover the cost for the entire renovation including the bath house and deck equipment.
The city’s parks department insists a projected a minimum cost of four million dollars to fix Memorial takes into account preservation measures needed to make the pool a historic site.
For now, the city’s capital budget for next year will keep a $1 million for a repair for the pool and $2.5 million for a replacement.
Another public hearing on next year’s capital budget will be held Sept. 20.
