Repellent use urged

La Crosse County is reporting its first instance of the West Nile virus for the year.

A dead crow tested positive for the virus.

West Nile can cause headaches, fever, and muscle pain in humans. Mosquitoes transmit the virus to people, and the insects can get it from feeding on infected birds.

The vast majority of people experience no symptoms from infections. Older adults and those with compromised immune systems are at greater risk.

Surveillance for West Nile by the county health department began in May this year but has watched for the virus in the county since 2001.

People who want to avoid the virus are urged to limit their time outdoors to avoid mosquitoes, use repellent and get rid of containers which can hold standing water.
