Existing library operated out of old grocery store

HOLMEN, Wis. — In the last decade, village officials in Holmen made the decision to construct two new public buildings about a block apart.

The police station near Halfway Creek has been open for about a year. Tuesday, ground was broken for a bigger village library, which could be completed by this time next year.

The village president, Nancy Proctor, says there was much agreement on the general location for the $3.9 million library.

The county library system is headquartered in Holmen. Talks will begin soon to consider merging the county library branches with the La Crosse library system.

The 18-thousand square foot library and community center will be roughly four times the size of Holmen’s existing library, just off Main Street.

The new building will be four times as large as the current library, which has operated for decades in a former grocery store.
