La Crosse superintendent focusing
on students in extreme poverty

A great deal of excitement and anticipation as classes begin today in area school districts.

La Crosse superintendent Randy Nelson is eager as always but also understanding that each year presents challenges, especially among some groups of students.  Challenge accepted, says Nelson

“Helping our students maintain a strong degree of success, no matter what differences that students may bring to school, is an important part for us,” Nelson said.

Nelson says there’s a special focus on those students who are living in extreme poverty or are homeless.  He says, on any given day, there are 100 to 130 homeless students going to school in the district.

“Especially support children who find themselves, for whatever reason find themselves homeless, so we’re really providing as many supports as we can for all of our students,” Nelson said. “Because when we talk educating everyone, we really are meaning everyone.”

Police say it might be useful to remember that a new law mandates amber lights on buses to alert drivers that the bus is getting ready to stop.
