H.S. FOOTBALL: Defending state champion Caledonia starts right where it left off
La Crescent does something no team did against Warriors last year
LA CRESCENT, Minn. — The defending Minnesota Class 2A high school football champions, coming off a 14-0 season, started right where it left off.
Caledonia quarterback Owen King hit Andrew Goergen for three touchdowns in leading the Warriors to a 45-14 win over La Crescent.
King finished 10-for-17 for 194 yards, while Goergen caught six for 103.
La Crescent, playing its first game since the passing of running back Mario Miller last July, did do something no team could do against the Warriors last year.
When Ty Mallicoat hit Ben Nelson for a 12-yard touchdown, it was the first time Caledonia gave up a score in the first half since last season.
The Warriors outscored opponents 497-0 in the first half last season – including a 40-0 win in the state championship against Pipestone.
Mallicoat hooked up with Nelson again, this time from 35-yards out, to start the third quarter, but that only pulled the Lancers within 35-14.
Mallicoat finished 10-for-31 for 62 yards with an interception. Caledonia outgained La Crescent 342-64.
