Council votes on merging city, county libraries Monday

It’s looking increasingly like there won’t be a library merger anytime soon in La Crosse.

While La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat is pushing it, county leaders seem to want to just study the idea.

City council and library board member James Cherf believes someday change will be inevitable for all libraries, as it’s just a sign of the times.

“Years ago libraries used to be the guardian of information,” Cherf said. “Clearly now they’re the purveyors of information.

So much information is now available electronically and knowledge and information is growing exponentially. No longer can one person know everything.”

Cherf is among those who have questioned the timeline in Kabat’s proposal. The merger idea is likely to be put off for a couple months by the council, while more study is done.

The council will discuss the measure Monday.
