Medical centers contributing healthy recipes, promoting nutrition

La Crosse area schools taking part in a healthy-eating program are going to try including a little Mayo … and Gundersen – hospitals, that is.

The two local medical centers have joined the Coulee Region Farm2School project, which brings veggies and meat from area farms to school lunchrooms.

Gundersen Health System CEO Scott Rathgaber visited Holmen High School Monday to see how that district is raising its own fresh food.

“Holmen does the asparagus garden,” he said. “Also, they’re into growing chickens to help feed the school district.”

Gundersen and Mayo will contribute healthy recipes to the districts involved in Farm2School, along with helping the schools teach kids more about good nutrition.

Six districts in La Crosse and Houston Counties use Farm 2 School to help develop their meal programs.
