A new student union at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse could be ready for business by the start of the new year.

Construction on the union, next to Wimberly Hall, began two years ago.

Larry Ringgenberg, who runs the university centers, says the eventual knock-down of the current Cartwright Center is still a part of the overall project budget, which is over $50 million dollars.

“The whole project costs involves a a lot of other things and includes $1.5 million to knock down Cartwritght Center and that’s not going to happen for a couple years,” Rinnenberg said.

He thinks primary construction of the union will be finished yet this month. New equipment would still have to be moved in before the student center could open, probably just before the spring semester.
