Families struggling, getting help from Central teachers and students
Over 40 percent of students are
on reduced/free meal program
A family struggling to put food on the table is a hard thing to put in perspective.
A dilemma that only happens in struggling parts of the world, right? It’s happening right here.
“At the La Crosse School District, we have like 40-45 percent free or reduced meals, which is kind of the proxy for childhood poverty,” Central High School teacher John Havlicek said.
So, teachers like Havlicek and a group of students are doing something about it. They’ve partnering with the Hunger Task Force to create a free food distribution center at Central.
From 7-8:30 a.m. and 2:30-4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Fridays the site is open for families in need and for donations.
“People are like, ‘Hey, what are you taking for donations?'” Havlicek said. “We’ll take anything.”
