It’s something every kid wished for on those hot days in the classroom.

The one time a year the teach said, “Let’s have class outside today.”

Well, at Spence Elementary, that reality could be an every day occurrence (or at least during the warmer weather months). And, on top of that, students will get to play in the dirt.

Thanks to a $2,000 donation from the Sprout For Kids Foundation the school will be creating an outdoor classroom and garden as part of the Spence GROW La Crosse program, which already has 550-square feet of garden space in the school district.

“The second I heard about it, I absolutely wanted to support it,” Sprout for Kids Foundation’s Tami Plourde said. ” (I) had no idea that they were building gardens around the elementary school, so of course I think this is fantastic.”

Students will learn to garden around a nature-related curriculum. Food from the garden will be used in the cafeteria and for snacks.

The Sprout For Kids Foundation has been giving back to the La Crosse Community for 17 years, thanks to Plourde and Joe Katchever, who own of Pearl Street Brewery and On Three Printing in La Crosse.

The money for Spence was raised through an annual Bikes At The Brewery event run by Jim Whistleman.
