Public hearing Wed. on city program to get home, business owners out of floodplain

The City of La Crosse is trying to alleviate hundreds of people from costly flood insurance by getting them out of the floodplain.
A public hearing on the program will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the city council chambers.
La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat said those affected in the city included:
- Over 500 owner-occupied homes
- Over 800 non-owner-occupied homes
- 800 accessoried buildings
- 200 businesses
“We’re talking a very significant part of our city,” Kabat said.
The city is offering $250,000 city wide to applicants wishing to elevate or improve their property to escape the floodplain. People can apply for 80 percent of – or $5,000 for – consulting work and $20,000 – or 50 percent of – the construction costs.
Building must be valued at a minimum of $50,000.
