City council overrides La Crosse Mayor Tim Kabat’s veto on spending plan
Council wanted extra $250,000, which Kabat vetoed
The council has spoken and the veto has been overridden. 
La Crosse city council member Bob Seaquist had some strong works for Mayor Tim Kabat at a meeting Thursday night.
Earlier in the week, Kabat had vetoed $250,000 in extra funds the council wanted attached to the mayor’s $69-million spending plan for 2017.
Just before a vote to override Kabat’s veto, Seaquist said, “The mayor did not give input. All we got from the mayor was a threat read by the city attorney for a veto.
“That’s no way to engage this council in the process and it’s no way to lead.”
Seaquist was one of 12 voting to override the mayor’s veto, which will increase La Crosse’s tax rate by $.04 to $12.28 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The four council members who voted not to override were Richard Becker, Paul Medinger, Douglas Happel and James Cherf.
“Every single call I received today,” Seaquist said Thursday night, “were people from my district, the district that I represent, saying, ‘Override the veto.'”
Kabat’s spending plan will essentially hold city property taxes flat from last year.
Earlier in the week, Kabat said this about the extra funds: “It really comes down to taxing what we need but not more than what is needed. The arguments that we should have a cushion or more flexibility, I just don’t agree with.”
