Republican lost by 56 votes to incumbent Democratic Sen. Jennifer Shilling

A recount is coming in the very tight state senate race in Western Wisconsin.

On Tuesday, the Dan Kapanke campaign informed the Wisconsin Elections Commission that a request for a recount will be made Wednesday.

After official canvassing in the four counties of the 32nd state senate district, the Republican Kapanke wound up 56 votes behind Democratic incumbent Senator Jennifer Shilling in the race.

The recount will cost thousands of dollars but the margin of victory is so slight that Kapanke’s campaign will not bear any of the cost.

The campaign will likely be looking very closely at the thousands of absentee ballots cast in the race for possible challenges.
