Enrollment for class has fallen from 24 in 2002, to 6 this semester

A Hmong language course about to be cut created a bit of a stir at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse.

A recent meeting with Hmong advocates and instructors, along with UW-L administration ended with a compromise for the course.

Dr. Maureen Moeller, chair of Modern Languages, said the course will be offered online for the spring semester.

“I hadn’t heard from them prior, so I wanted to find a solution for them,” Moeller said of a meeting with H.O.P.E., a Hmong advocacy group on campus.

Moeller added that enrollment in the course has fallen from 24, when first offered in 2002, to just six students during this semester.

She also said that in an email to language instructors, asking for requests of courses to be offered for the spring semester, Hmong Intermediate Language was never brought up.

The future of the class will be reviewed every semester.
