State may borrow money instead

A couple of Republican state senators have made up their minds that Wisconsin will not raise gas taxes, if they can help it.

Today, an assembly committee has a hearing on plans to increase Wisconsin transportation spending by borrowing more money instead of hiking taxes.

Speaking with reporters Monday, Senators Chris Kapenga and Duey Stroebel announced they are firmly against increasing gas taxes to pay for transportation needs.

“If you look at the Top 10 states in the country that have the highest, most inefficient spending on their roads, you will find that almost all of them, to a T, have no right to work and have a prevailing wage,” Kapenga said. “I can’t play hypotheticals because I’m not four years down the road. But, the information I have, a tax increase is definitely a wrong move.”

The Senators are joined by Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker in arguing that the voters put Republicans in charge of the state to oppose tax hikes. That, despite a call by Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos, who wants to consider raising some taxes, including to fix Wisconsin highways.

“That is not, in our opinion, even an option,” Stroebel said. “We did not come in here to increase taxes. From our perspective, trying to put in place a permanent tax increase to fix a temporary issue, and that is not responsible.”

Wisconsin should end its utterly failed prohibition of marinuana and pay fix its atrocious roads and infrastructure. Anytime you can afford to pay your debts while not raising taxes or borrowing to do so while simulataneously expanding individual liberty it is a serious win win for the individual, the state and society as a whole. Legalize it Wisconsin!
