Lots of questions from Shelby on boundary agreement with La Crosse

Committee now looking for public comments on 25-year plan

A new, long-term agreement between two local governments has some watching with a wary eye.

The town of Shelby paying La Crosse. La Crosse paying Shelby. Money exchanged for libraries, parks, police. Rights to annexation. 

Those are all parts of a pending boundary agreement between the two governments that have been at odds for decades over the very issues the agreement is meant to come to terms on.

The committee that has drawn up conditions to the agreement are looking for comments to the tentative plans it’s come up with.

Dozens came to All-Star Lanes on Mormon Coulee Rd. on a chilly Monday night to hear about the 25-year plan and ask questions.

Among the biggest concerns voiced by the Shelby-heavy group was how to avoid getting annexed into La Crosse, along with concerns that Shelby paying the city for services would result in a town tax bump.  

There were also questions about water and sewer, annexation. Taxes. And, if the town pays the city more for services, they were told, then there could be a property tax bump in Shelby.  

Right now, the agreement is very tentative and open to changes.
